Pain Can Be a Comfort

Have you ever found pain to be a comfort

A type of release

I’m guilty of it

When for years all I could feel was nothing

I cut just to feel something

Pain can remind you

You’re alive

When you’re deep down in the pit

You need something sometimes just to feel alive

When you haven’t felt the sunshine

In God knows when

Pain is sometimes your only companion

Your only ken in a world that’s upside down

Where do you go when the pain of life is too much to bear

You may be tempted down a dark trail of physical pain

But I’m here to tell you its only a temporary salve

With long lasting effects you don’t wish

Sometimes it comforts as it affords a sense of control

But it can so quickly spiral beyond you

Out of your control

Making life harder

As you become reliant upon it

The wounds the scars

Causing questions you’d rather not answer

I’ve been there and the answers you give unless

Truthful always ring hollow

But such is the way of things

Depression can drive a man to many things

None of them great

Don’t give into its sweet allure

Pain is not an answer to your problems

Not an answer that you want anyways
