The Lights Are Out

Father I’ve turned off all the lights

I wont read you a story

The Time has gone

I’ve told you I love you all I could over the last few days

I’ve told you goodbye

Your eyes have been closed for days

It’s killing me to see you waste away

Daddy wont you please just let go

We’re as prepared as we can be

Its been 3 days since you opened your eyes

Or spoke a word

I’ll make you proud

Daddy don’t be afraid

I’ll take care of Mom and my brothers

Just let go

It’s my turn to chase the monsters away

I’m begging you please

Just let go

It’s time to go

Jesus and your mom are waiting on the other side

Don’t be afraid

It’s killing us to watch you die

The time to leave has gone

Just let go

This poem has been floating in my head for almost a year it’s the thoughts that ran through my head as my dad lay dying in hospice.  I’m finally in a place where I could get it out as its been playing on repeat in my head at least once a week. This poem was also partially inspired by a song James Sturgis reccomended.
