We lived in a world of painted dreams
Idealistic visions of a future never to come
Hell, we were supposed to have flying cars
Atomic cars, atomic energy
Bright painted futures
They inspire hope and innovation
Whatever happened to painted dreams
Now when people speak of the future
Its dark and dismal
Whatever happened to painted dreams
What happened to our starry-eyed dreams
What happened to our hopes and prayers for the future
Why are we stuck in this pessimistic state
I dream of a bright and glorious future
For myself and so do many others
But when they dream of the world as a whole
I don’t hear
Hope I don’t hear glory
I hear fear and loathing
What happened to our painted dreams
When did they become painted nightmares
When did our dreams turn to visions of the apocalypse
Why can’t we dream of a bright future
When it comes to humanity as a whole
I want us to paint dreams
Again in glorious technicolor
Instead of dreary back and white
So let us conjure up the courage to paint them again
I will dust my paint and brushes off
And paint my dreams again
And pray that we all do so
