I thought healing would feel like peace instead
It feels like learning to live with an empty hole
Where you used to be
I thought healing would come peace
Instead, it comes with emptiness and learning to live without you
I knew that healing from your loss would look vastly different
From any loss I had suffered before, but I wasn’t prepared for just how different it would be
Since cancer claimed you, I won’t lie I’ve been a little lost
I can’t say how many times I’ve turned a corner and expected still to see you there
How many times I’ve just wanted to show you another poem and I can’t
Still, I’m happy for you
Because I know you’re no longer in pain and you’re up in heaven
Spending time with God having the time of your life
I thought healing would bring peace instead it’s left me with an unsettled feeling and a gap where you once were
Instead, it feels like heartbreak over, and over again lessening but continuing to come in waves.

This really got me. I love the honesty here about healing. It isn’t always quiet or comfortable, but often asks us to grieve what we’ve lost before we can embrace what’s ahead.
