They say the road to hell is paved with Good Intentions
Indeed, it is the road to dissatisfaction and cynicism with God as well
The good intentions so many of us have when it comes to God’s grace
Have us trying to earn it and wearing a mask when we fail because we don’t want anyone else to know we screwed up
It’s impossible to earn though because time, and time, and time again to infinity
You’ll keep failing again, and again, and again
Simply because you’re human
Instead you have to live in grace not good intentions
God showed all of his cards when he sent his son down to earth
He left eternity to enter time
He stepped out of the heavens to take on flesh to face the burden of our sins and failures
He died the death of a criminal on a cross to be the sacrificial lamb whose blood covered our sins
He suffered and died one of the most excruciating hours long deaths of the time for us
When we didn’t deserve it and yet you seek to earn it
What folly is this
What hubris to think that you could earn the grace and the sacrifice so freely given
No that day he said something new he essentially said to himself
I will tell them that i love them like my own son
I will sacrifice him for them
Then I will raise him from the dead to prove my love for him and them
I will tell them that i will always love them
That there are no logs of past offenses any more
There is no track record of how many times they’ve failed or how little they’ve prayed or read their bible
If only they accept the grace freely given
I will tell them that I have justified them t=with my own righteousness
And that no one and nothing not even themselves can take that away from them.
It is a gift that will not be taken back
I will tell them I’m crazy about them
I will tell them they have a new nature in me that they are saints now not just saved sinners
I will show them that i live in them that my love and, my nature is at their disposal
That there is no secret agenda, no hidden trapdoor
I will show them that I forgive them every time
There are no hail mary’s to recite no penances to make
No pilgrimages to take
It is simply about accepting that they are forgiven, and my grace covers all
It is simply understanding that I’m not on the other side of some chasm tut tutting about their sins looking down on them
Telling them to get their shit right
I’m standing next to them with my arm around them
Saying yeah there used to be a big pile of sins here
But look i got rid of it so now i want you to trust in me and my grace
And use the new nature i gave you and am giving you to do better
But i wont just leave you alone to do it
I’m with you until the end of the age and beyond till the end of this universe
And beyond that.
That is the beauty of Grace which so few come to realize.
This was inspired by the book “The Cure: What If God Isn’t Who You Think He Is And Neither Are You”. It’s an amazing book which I am thoroughly enjoying reading.
